Here’s a question for you: does tipping still serve servers or their customers?

You may have seen this post in your Facebook feed. A local newlywed supposedly left a waitress “a tip,” but it is a “tip” from that supposed local waitress that has gotten attention from New York to London.

 

As New York’s WPIX-TV website has it, a Centerville, Ohio, waitress and her new husband, both servers at an unnamed local restaurant, got back from their honeymoon on Oct. 9.

The wife, Jessica Morris, waited on a couple who likewise had just gotten back from their honeymoon Saturday.

From WPIX-TV:

 “At the end of the evening, Jessica says she dropped off the couple’s check and assumed everything was fine. When she returned, the couple had disappeared and left her a little note with a $0 tip.

“He’s my husband, find your own. Good luck :),” the ticket read.

The customer, Jenny, also apparently had the unmitigated gall to steal poor Jessica’s pen. What a dot, dot dot!

 

Jessica took to Facebook as people often do when ticked.

In a lengthy post that has apparently now been deleted and was never screen-grabbed, Jessica gives Jenny the what for and talks about how awesome her own husband, supposedly a dude named Travis, is in comparison:

“So, Dear Jenny,
I would like you to know, the server that was in the section across from mine, that I kept talking to and checking on throughout the time of you sitting at my table IS MY HUSBAND. Which I found on my own, and looks better than yours. Also, I would like you to know that I’m sorry MY HUSBAND treated me to a cruise for my honeymoon and not a restaurant. As well as, MY HUSBAND would never let me feel so insecure that I would feel the need to write such a terrible note to a server and make them feel the way you have.
So Jenny, here’s a life tip for you from me, your insecurity as a woman is heartbreaking. Have pride in yourself and your relationship with YOUR husband to where you don’t need to put another down to bring yourself up. Especially a server who lives off her tips and needs them to help her husband pay bills. Also, Jenny, I hope you like the pen, because it’s my present to you. One NEWLYWED to another….”

Not certain this story is true. I haven’t exactly searched high and low, but I haven’t been able to find the local waitress Jessica, her hubby or direct evidence of the original post.

But it could have happened and touches on the broader topic of tipping.

New York’s Danny Meyer announced last month that he would end tipping from his restaurants telling All Things Considered’s Kelly McEvers “that restaurant patrons have unwittingly believed that they could, if they wanted to, use their tip to punish bad service, and/or to praise great service.”

“Jenny” was surely trying to teach our proud gal Jessica a lesson with that goose egg of a tip.

Joe’s Crab Shack just announced it would end tipping.

Instead the chain, which no longer has a location in the Dayton area, will pay wait staff members about $14 an hour, according to Restaurant Business. 

The exact wage during the company’s test would apparently vary from server to server based on their past performance,” the site said.

CEO Raymond Blanchette said they’d get about $2.13 an hour at many competing restaurants.

They’d fare better in Ohio, but not by much.

The Buckeye State’s minimum wage in Ohio is $8.10 an hour  for non-tip employees, but only $4.05 for those who receive a tip, according to the Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Industrial Compliance.

Blanchette called the new practice a “forward-thinking policy,” according to CNBC. Those with experience will be paid more.

I am not sure if Blanchette’s policy is a fix or really that forward-thinking, but it is not exactly fair that workers who bust their butts have their lives negatively impacted by irrational, misinformed, mean-spirited stupid and/or stingy customers.
