So have you heard about that Toledo mayoral candidate who predicted that the city would basically become the pits of hell if she were not elected?

Well, she’s from here.

Politician and accidental internet sensation Opal Covey was raised in West Carrollton and graduated from West Carollton High School.

She’s well-known in Toledo, but got national attention last month when a video of her speaking in tongues and predicting great destruction during an interview with Toledo’s NBC 24 went viral.
She thinks she was cheated out of a prior election.

“Thank you, Jesus,” the self-proclaimed prophetess said after speaking in tongues at the conclusion of the interview. “That was a confirmation, if people don’t give me what I earned in 2013 back, and I’m not on that seat in November, then you’ll see God visit the city in the greatest destruction you’ve ever seen.”

The 1958 West Carrollton grad has run for mayor five times, including this go-around. She came in last place Tuesday, getting less than 1 percent, according to the Toledo Blade.

The 75-year-old evangelist told the Toledo Blade it was God’s plan that she’d be Toledo’s mayor:
“Her campaign platform has not changed much over the years. It’s based around the “pot of gold” Toledo is sitting on, its untapped tourism industry. A vision from God told her that the creation of amusement parks in the downtown area, in particular Promenade Park, would bring hundreds of millions of dollars a year in revenue in the city.”
In an 2009 article, Covey told the Blade “she had her first prophecy at age 13 while fighting off strep throat.”
There you have it.
